Loosely based on Lionel White's novel 'Obsession', Godard uses the story (a man fed up with his materialistic life runs off with his child's babysitter and chaos ensues) as a framework to incorporate many elements of his personal philosophies, as well as ideas and techniques already introduced in previous films. The presence of Jean-Paul Belmondo on the run evokes 'A bout de souffle', and the stunning widescreen cinematography recalls 'Le Mepris'.
If both these films feature themes of problems with communication between men and women, 'Pierrot Le Fou' ups the ante even further: Belmondo is the reflexive thinker, Karina the active doer. They are polar opposites; two sides of the same coin.
It has the songs of 'Une femme est une femme' (and of course Anna Karina, who has never looked as beautiful in colour) and a structure not dissimilar to 'Vivre sa vie' and 'Une femme mariée'. The anti-war sentiment of 'Les Carabiniers' is touched upon
again in Belmondo and Karina's performance of the Vietnam war. Samuel Fuller also delivers a brilliant cameo.
Despite the loose plot, improvised script and multitude of ideas and references, the film remains a joy to watch. It rewards repeated viewings and while it works in its own right, it's also further enhanced by knowledge of Godard's previous films and acts as a signpost to his subsequent works. I could go on and on about this film, but I won't - simply put, it's a masterpiece.
