Santiago Alvarez - 79 Primaveras aka 79 Springtimes (1969)

 This film memorializes the leader of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, on the occasion of his death. It narrates the story of a life which is also the story of a nation--recounting his important accomplishments in the struggle against colonialism and imperialism. The simplicity of his ascetic life of study, work, and struggle is contrasted to the pomp of his official funeral, where the film documents the immense outpouring of grief by the Vietnamese people on the death of their leader.

Santiago Álvarez - Abril de Vietnam en el año del gato AKA April in Vietnam in the Year of the Cat (1975)

Santiago Alvarez, founder of the Cuban film school and for years director of Noticiero ICAIC, toured various regions of the world to portray the events and significant personalities of the second half of the twentieth century. April in the Year of the Cat was a portrayal of the long struggle of the Vietnamese people for their independence in various historical periods, also covering its rich cultural tradition, in the soundtrack as well as the images. This film is itself an important witness to the final victory of the North Vietnamese Army, the U.S. withdrawal and the country's reunification after the fall of Saigon in the days of April 1975.

Leon Ichaso - Azúcar amarga AKA Bitter Sugar (1996)

Gustavo is a young Havana Communist who believes in the revolution; he hopes for a scholarship to study aeronautical engineering in Prague. But his faith in the new Cuba is tested: his father, a psychiatrist, can make four times as much playing piano at a hotel for foreigners; his sweetheart, Yolanda, wants a career as a dancer and longs for the riches of Miami; his younger brother Bobby simply wants to play rock music, and as a result is in constant trouble with the authorities. When Bobby takes a shocking step of revolt and Gustavo is refused service at a foreigners-only bar, the contradictions in his resolve to become a "new man" push him to the breaking point.
