In February 2009 a group of Danish soldiers accompanied by documentary filmmaker Janus Metz arrived at Armadillo, an army base in the southern Afghan province of Helmand. Metz and cameraman Lars Skree spent six months following the lives of young soldiers situated less than a kilometer away from Taliban positions. The outcome of their work is a gripping and highly authentic war drama that was justly awarded the Grand Prix de la Semaine de la Critique at this year's Cannes film festival. But it also provoked furious debate in Denmark concerning the controversial behavior of certain Danish soldiers during a shootout with Taliban fighters.

Grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic Sabbath: Benjamin Christensen’s legendary film uses a series of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches of the middle ages suffered the same hysteria as turn-of-the-century psychiatric patients. But the film itself is far from serious—instead it’s a witches’ brew of the scary, gross, and darkly humorous. —The Criterion Collection

Lars von Trier’s black comedy The Boss of It All (Direktøren for det hele) concerns an IT company owner who — in need of a figurehead to “hide behind” when confronted with employee problems – invented the personage of a CEO during the startup period for his corporation. The scheme worked for a surprisingly long period, but when the time arrives to sell the business, massive problems arise – for the prospective buyers insist on only negotiating with the CEO, in person. Thus, the owner further extends the ruse, by hiring a down-and-out actor to impersonate the chief officer. With Direktøren for det hele, von Trier uses a new means of filmmaking for this film: Automavision, whereby filming is done with an “automatic randomized camera” that selects the shots. It became a means for Von Trier to “clean up” his approach to directorial work and reconnect with his own love of filmmaking. —allmovie guide

This tale is set in Iceland immediately after WW II when the American forces abandoned the island, leaving behind a considerable number of empty bunkers which were immediately appropriated by hundreds of poverty-stricken Icelanders. The film follows the daily exploits of the Tomasson family, who live in the old army barracks at what was once Camp Thule. Gogo is the daughter of Karolina — who had a fling 40 years before, got pregnant and was later married to the kindly Tommi Tomasson who took pity on her. Karolina repaid his kindness with four decades of marital misery. Gogo, who raised three children during her first marriage, marries an American G.I. named Charlie Brown and leaves her children and family to start a new life. Most of the subsequent tale centers on Gogo’s sons Baddi and Danni. Baddi goes to the U.S. with his mother, while quiet and younger Danni remains in Iceland. Baddi soon returns and proves to be a class-A American-style boor. He creates trouble for Danni, who sadly observes his brother’s changes, but says nothing. Baddi makes matters worse when he seduces Hveragerdur, the girl next door whom Danni has secretly loved for ages. Baddi then marries the girl, but it is an unhappy union. After overcoming his grief, Danni becomes a pilot. The story takes a darker turn after Karolina has a disturbing premonition.
