Rémy Belvaux - C'est arrivé près de chez vous aka Man bites dog (1992)

Not that it was the first media-evil movie ever -- for that, you'd have to go back at least as far as Billy Wilder's Ace in the Hole -- but it scooped Serial Mom, Natural Born Killers, To Die For, the endless spate of 1990s films whose directors suddenly noticed that methods of mass communication were inherently corrupt and corruptive. Even The Blair Witch Project owes a debt to Man Bites Dog's grainy mockumentary shaky-cam style. Like it or not -- and you'd be excused for not liking it -- this Belgian award-winner has probably influenced every subsequent media take-off from the sublime (Series 7) to the ridiculous (Ed TV).

Felix Van Groeningen - Steve + Sky (2004)

Flemish filmmaker Felix Van Groeningen's debut feature STEVE + SKY, a gritty romantic drama about a struggling petty criminal and his shockingly beautiful stripper lover, takes place amidst a backdrop of crime and shady goings-on in the red light district of Ghent. Recently released from a prison stint for a drug violation, scrawny Steve (Titus De Voogdt) looks up his cell-mate Jean-Claude (Johan Heldenbergh) and immediately joins him in a motorcycle-stealing racket and the reopening of his exotic dance club. Along the way, he meets the gorgeous Sky (Van Groeningen's girlfriend and fashion model Delfine Bafort), a wounded soul looking for her place in the world. As their unlikely romance develops and Sky grows dependent on Steve's affections, he rejects her love and his alienation places a nearly fatal strain on Sky's fragile psyche.

1943. More than 100,000 “indigenous” soldiers leave the French colonies of Algeria, Morocco and Senegal to liberate their “fatherland” from the Nazi enemy. Among these volunteers, Said – who enlisted mainly to escape poverty – leaves his home town in Algeria to fight for the French in the Second World War where he soon discovers the cultural and hierarchical hurdles he must overcome in order to succeed, indeed survive, in this brutal environment.
Joining ranks with other North African soldiers, Said is sent into numerous battles where the outcome is less than certain and it becomes clear preferential treatment is given to the mainlanders over the hard working Arabs.
Captain Martinez, Yassir, Messaoud, Abdelkader and Said are sent into dangerous territory with the promise of great reward. They must rely on each others strengths and support the members in need in order to survive with the hope to prosper from their courageous efforts. They fight in Italy, in Provence, in the Vosges mountains, until they find themselves being the only survivors of their unit to defend a small Alsacian village.
Their greatest fears become reality: can they depend on the word of their colonist superiors?

A tale of forgotten heroes, a moment in French and North African history that was long kept away from public attention.
