Pål Sletaune - Naboer AKA Next Door (2005)

One of the most talented Scandinavian directors of present, Pål Sletaune returns with his third feature after his award winning feature debut, Budbringeren (1997) and his follow-up Amatørene (2001). Naboer is a film that will be hated or loved, but if you opt for the latter you'll probably be joined by Roman Polanski as Sletaune borrows inspiration from both Rosemary's Baby, Repulsion and The Tenant.
This is a haunting, suspenseful and psychologically resonant mystery thriller. But what is more remarkable is its relevance, which is something surrealistic experiences on film can rarely bolster. Thematically, Naboer has some intense and torrential material to offer. It could easily have become messy (as Cronenberg probably would've made it), but it remains on top of its game and excels on balancing between the delicate and the repulsive. Julia Schacht (in her feature debut) is brilliant as the girl of forbidden fruit and in the lead the massively (bordering on destructively) prolific Kristoffer Joner gives the arguably best performance of his career.
