I chose a number of screenshots to illustrate especially how closely related this film is to In the Mood for Love. It's sort of part 1 of the trilogy with 2046. There's a strong thematic (quirky, unconventional romances; girl meets cop; self-imposed exile from HK) and motif correspondence between the films, where  WKW is already rehearsing his favoured shots and romantic constellations:. the girl against the wall. Boisterous bedroom play. The woman descending the stairs. Intimate walks at night, after the rain. The booth in the café (using the same cups). The last screenshot almost seems to usher in Tony Leung's character in ITMFL, imo. Here he also leaves behind the last vestiges of the HK crime plot staples, and the (unhappy) ending seems both  to signal the dead-endedness of the crime plot for his development of film and it sets up the unresolved sense of mourning that his future characters would live through.
